Background of the Study
Flooding has been a persistent challenge for many urban areas in Nigeria, including Kubwa, an urban district within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. Nyesom Wike, as the FCT Minister, has focused on tackling infrastructural issues, including flood control, as part of his broader agenda for urban renewal. Flooding in Kubwa has been exacerbated by rapid urbanization, poor drainage systems, and the encroachment of residential areas into flood-prone zones. As a result, many parts of Kubwa have experienced seasonal flooding, which leads to loss of property, displacement, and disruption of daily activities.

Nyesom Wike’s flood control strategies, which include improved drainage systems, embankments, and early warning systems, aim to reduce the risks and consequences of flooding in Kubwa and other parts of the FCT. The success of these initiatives is crucial for the long-term sustainability of urban development in the FCT. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of Wike’s flood control strategies in Kubwa, focusing on their impact on residents’ lives and the overall urban environment.

Statement of the Problem
Despite various flood control efforts, flooding remains a recurring issue in Kubwa, leading to considerable human and economic costs. The failure of previous strategies and insufficient infrastructural development in flood-prone areas raises questions about the effectiveness of Wike’s current initiatives. This study will assess whether Wike’s flood control strategies have been successful in addressing the flooding issues in Kubwa and whether the strategies are sustainable in the long run.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of Nyesom Wike’s flood control strategies in Kubwa, FCT.

  2. To assess the impact of these strategies on the quality of life and safety of residents in Kubwa.

  3. To identify the challenges and successes associated with the implementation of flood control measures in Kubwa.

Research Questions

  1. How effective have Nyesom Wike’s flood control strategies been in reducing flooding in Kubwa?

  2. What impact have these strategies had on the lives and safety of residents in Kubwa?

  3. What are the challenges faced in implementing flood control strategies in Kubwa?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nyesom Wike’s flood control strategies have successfully reduced the incidence and severity of flooding in Kubwa.

  2. The flood control strategies have improved the safety and quality of life for residents in Kubwa.

  3. Challenges such as inadequate funding and poor coordination have hindered the full success of flood control strategies in Kubwa.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the evaluation of Nyesom Wike’s flood control strategies in Kubwa, FCT. It will assess the effectiveness, impact, and challenges associated with these strategies in mitigating flooding. Limitations include the availability of data on flood incidents and long-term effects, as well as potential bias in public perception of the strategies.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Flood Control Strategies: Measures and interventions aimed at reducing the impact of flooding, such as drainage improvements, flood barriers, and floodplain management.

  2. Urbanization: The process of population migration from rural to urban areas, often leading to increased pressure on infrastructure and environmental systems.

  3. Quality of Life: The general well-being of individuals and communities, including aspects such as health, safety, and access to basic services.
